Acrobatics does not have to wait for a gym class. With a soft mat, a little floor space and fifteen minutes, you can give your toddler a full-body workout that builds strength, coordination and — most importantly — confidence. Below are five moves our coaches teach in the very first AcroBabyKids courses, adapted so parents can guide them safely at home.
1. Log rolls
Lay your child on their back on a mat with arms stretched overhead, and encourage them to roll sideways like a log. Rolling teaches body awareness and is the foundation of almost every acrobatic skill that comes later. Make it a game: roll towards a favourite toy, or roll together side by side.
2. Forward roll with support
Kneel beside your child, tuck their chin to their chest ("look at your belly button!") and guide their hips gently over. The tucked chin is the one detail that matters most — it protects the neck and makes the roll smooth. Never rush this one; slow and assisted is exactly right for a long time.
3. Bear walk
Hands and feet on the floor, bottom up high — and off you go across the room. The bear walk strengthens shoulders, wrists and core, which your child needs before any handstand work. Race each other; losing to a giggling two-year-old is part of the method.
4. Assisted handstand against your body
Sit on your heels, let your child place their hands on the mat in front of you and gently lift their legs up against your chest. A few seconds upside down is plenty at first. Being inverted trains the vestibular system and, done playfully, most children ask for "again!" immediately.
5. Balance beam on a line
No beam needed — a strip of masking tape on the floor works perfectly. Walk forwards, backwards, sideways; carry a soft toy on the head for an extra challenge. Balance work quietly develops the deep core muscles that protect a child in every other activity.
Safety first, always
Stay within arm's reach, use a soft surface, and stop while it is still fun — a short happy session beats a long tired one every time. If your child resists a move, skip it and come back another day. In our courses every exercise is introduced in a strict order for exactly this reason: each skill prepares the body for the next one.
